Aspida

Personal CO2/O2 Monitor

Personal gas monitoring for safer working environments

The Aspida is designed to help protect personnel from the risks associated with oxygen (O₂) enrichment or depletion, carbon dioxide (CO₂) exposure, and inert gas leaks.

Built as a robust, high-specification personal monitor, the Aspida can be worn on a belt or mounted as a secondary safety measure alongside a primary monitoring system. It is available in oxygen-only, carbon dioxide-only, or dual gas (O₂ / CO₂) configurations.

Named after the Greek word for “shield,” the Aspida supports regulatory compliance, provides maintenance reminders, and delivers reliable alerts to help reduce exposure to hazardous gas conditions.

Key Features

  • IP65-rated enclosure, offering protection against dust and water
  • Integrated data logging capability
  • Man down alarm for lone worker protection
  • Time Weighted Average (TWA) monitoring
  • Rechargeable battery operation
  • Intelligent software supporting up to two users per unit
  • User-configurable alarm settings

Recommended alarm set points:

  • 23.5% for oxygen (O₂) enrichment (in line with NHS SOPS / EH40 / OSHA)

Legislations / Standards

Regulations such as OSHA, EH40, and TÜV guidelines in Europe require that individuals are not exposed to unsafe levels of carbon dioxide, which can become hazardous even at relatively low concentrations.

Guidance also recommends the use of oxygen monitoring in environments where inert gases—such as nitrogen—are present, as leaks can reduce oxygen levels and create an asphyxiation risk.

NHS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) further highlight the importance of monitoring oxygen enrichment in relevant applications.

Analox works closely with customers to help ensure compliance with local regulations and application-specific requirements.

Additional Information

Understanding the risks

Elevated oxygen levels can lead to hyperoxia, while increased carbon dioxide concentrations are highly toxic. Both conditions present serious risks to health and safety.

In addition, leaks from inert gases such as nitrogen (N₂), argon (Ar), helium (He), or liquid nitrogen (LN₂) can displace oxygen in the surrounding area, creating a hazardous environment.

The Aspida is designed to detect these conditions early, providing clear alerts to help prevent exposure and maintain a safe workspace.

A practical safety solution

With both audible and visual alarms, integrated data logging, and a man down feature for lone workers, the Aspida provides a comprehensive approach to personal gas monitoring.

It is well suited for environments where gases are stored, piped, or actively used, offering a simple and effective way to enhance safety.

Rechargeable battery technology allows the unit to operate continuously for more than 12 hours between charges, supporting reliable use throughout the working day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I proof test my Aspida oxygen sensor?

The process for confidence testing the Aspida units is similar to the calibration process as described in the product user manual.

The procedure below is similar to testing carried out by Analox when validating the devices are operating within specification:

  1. Connect the supplied flow adaptor to the device (PGA-401DK) or connect the free end of the flow adaptor hose to a flow regulator (SA7L705XFLIND)
  2. Fit the flow regulator to a cylinder of 20.9% O2 (In N2) (SA7L11009)
  3. Set the flow rate to 0.2lpm
  4. Leave to settle for 3 – 5 minutes
  5. Carry out a calibration of the unit as described in the product user manual
  6. Ensure the oxygen reading is within ±0.75% of 20.9% O2
  7. Change the gas cylinder to a 100% N2 cylinder (SA7L10308)
  8. Set the flow rate to 0.2lpm
  9. Leave to settle for 3 – 5 minutes
  10. Verify that the O2 reading begins to fall and at about 19.5% the following activate: (Red LEDs, Sounder, Vibration motor (stops vibrating after 10 seconds), O2 reading shows a flashing outline and flashing symbol.
Note. 19.5% is a default O2 alarm level, this may vary if your device settings have been changed
  11. Verify that at 18% O2, the LEDs and sounder begin to pulse faster
Note. 18% is a default O2 alarm level, this may vary if your device settings have been changed
  12. Press the unnamed 5 button to mute the alarm
  13. Note the O2 reading is correct to ±0.75% of 0% O2
